The willingness to be vulnerable is known as trust. In an environment of trust, people can work together, getting things done faster and at a lower cost. People spend more time trying to protect themselves from those they cannot trust, leading to costs rising and business slowdowns.

Building Trust

The trust you build or destroy is dependant on a variety of factors. Trust is an ongoing journey of consistency in our relationships and interactions. It is never too late to start over. Use these methods to build trust:

  1. You should take the lead. You may have to give trust in order to receive it. Let people see that it is okay to be vulnerable. Help yourself & take the lead in apologising .
  2. Flexibility is necessary. When you overcommit, you put yourself and others at risk of failing to deliver. You are perceived as a forger.
  3. Believe good intent. Always assume positive intent in another person’s actions or words. When someone’s actions or words have had negative outcomes, have that conversation assuming that person has good intentions. It helps you address the conflict, resolve issues, and build a better understanding of each other while showing trust.
  4. Avoid gossip. People often assume it is an easy way to make new friends and bonds. Unexpectedly, however, you will come across as untrustworthy. I trust you, but I am concerned that you might reveal something that I told you in confidence to someone else.
  5. Speak and act accordingly. Always live up to your beliefs. A misalignment exists if you state that maintaining a sustainable pace is important, and yet you work long hours and answer emails on the weekends.
  6. Don’t be secretive. To build trust, the key is to make people feel free to share their feelings, problems, and desires. You may have to lead by example. Don’t be afraid to be open and honest with your team members.
  7. Make mistakes. Learn from them! Help everyone see that every mistake is an opportunity to learn. Let team members know about their personal learning opportunities. Leading by example is crucial. Refer to your own mistakes if you need to.
  8. Reside in each other’s humanity. Encourage employees to see each other as people with a rich life beyond the office. Structure personal stories for bonding. It is acceptable to touch on personal topics. You should begin by introducing yourself.
